Launch Romeo and Juliet to Fight Homophobia

Picture yourself out enjoying a night with friends.  You are at the theater, eagerly anticipating your local theater company’s production of Romeo and Juliet to begin. Romeo and Juliet, one of history’s greatest love stories, is the epitome of what most people consider to be true romance.  As the curtains open, Romeo and Juliet appear on stage.  How do you picture them?  As a man and a woman deeply in love?  How about two women?  What kind of lasting impact would this twist make on the audience?

Homophobia and bullying are a reality for countless teens and unfortunately this can lead to low self-esteem, depression and sometimes even suicide.  Young people should not be ostracized for who they are and who they choose to love, but this is a reality for many gay teens.  It’s time to give these teens a voice.  It’s time to show these teens that they are not alone.

The Red Eye Gravy Theatre Company produces exciting, innovative plays that tell the truth and address pressing social issues.  For this campaign, the Red Eye Gravy Theatre Company is retelling the greatest love story of all time, with a twist.  Romeo and Juliet will be played by two women.  Red Eye Gravy Theatre Company is taking a creative approach to address the issue of homophobia and is teaching people that love in all shapes and forms is beautiful and should be celebrated.  Awareness leads to action which leads to change.  All proceeds from the show will go to The Trevor Project, a non-profit organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth.

The campaign is off to an amazing start, reaching its tipping point goal of $500 within a week of launching.  Funds will be used to pay for renting rehearsal space and purchasing set pieces, costumes and props.  With about a month left, the campaign is well within reach of its total funding goal, $2,000.  This show will be the voice for all the questioning youths across the country that feel different or out of place.   Thanks to all the generous campaign backers, Red Eye Gravy Theatre Company will be able to Launch Romeo and Juliet to Fight Homophobia.
