StartSomeGood News

Last week on StartSomeGood, SIX new campaigns launched and one tipped:

  • People view the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail (VPRJ) as an “eyesore”. Kelvin Yao wants to change this. He likes the idea of using gardens to educate and uplift people. Therefore, he wants to create a garden of herbs, ornamental native plants, vegetable greens, and saplings to beautify the area around the jail and create a healthier environment for the inmates. His campaign to launch the VPRJ Gardens Project will help him purchase materials such as mulch, topsoil, building materials, and seeds to create a large herb garden. Any funds raised beyond his tipping point will go towards creating even more beautiful gardens around the jail.
  • TOK provides a support system for women and children who have been victims of slave and sex trafficking. TOK supports their growth and healing by teaching them tangible working and life skills for the future. The women and girls are taught how to crochet hats that are sold at a premium price so that TOK can afford to pay them a fair wage for their work. The TOK Project is raising money to help TOK connect with sex trade victims and build relationships with after care homes for sex trafficking victims. In addition, the funds will help TOK advertise and build a website where it will sell the hats.
  • Ethical Citizen Media, a program through Eway Entertainment, promotes a universal culture of peace by increasing access to new innovations in technology and information services. As a result of the internet, access to information is easy in most parts of the world. However, people living in under-served areas of the world have limited access to credible information. Ethical Citizen Media provides training in recording, reporting, and news broadcasting so that these populations have access to credible Citizen Journalists. The Spread Ethical Citizen Media campaign is raising funds to train these Citizen Journalists.
  • Project ME4 uses a mobile solar power generator as a movable classroom to teach kids hands-on skills they normally would not learn. The generator is used in emergency situations for solar electricity and purified water during a disaster. While it is not being used, kids can take advantage of the mobile classroom by taking classes focusing on a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curriculum. This campaign will launch ME4, allowing it to cover operating expenses for leasing the solar generator.
  • Blue Star Healing Touch is a low cost massage therapy service for military members and their families. This service was designed specifically keeping veterans suffering from PTSD in mind. Blue Star Healing Touch will also continue to serve current clientele and new corporate clients in order to supplement services to military members and ensure that the low price of services to military members is offset somehow. Getting Going with Massage for Veterans will help cover the costs of starting up in the state of Massachusetts.
  • EcoRise Youth Innovations partners with high school teachers to incorporate sustainability education into their daily curriculum. Students then use what they learn to participate in and create their own solutions to a specific sustainability challenge. The goal is to inspire a new generation of sustainability leaders. To make more of an impact, EcoRise is looking to grow. Its campaign is raising funds to fully launch the program at seven schools in the Austin area this fall.
  • Thanks to all of Dash’s generous backers, its campaign has tipped, raising over $3,000 that will go towards launching the smartphone application that organizes and tracks parent-teacher communication. Reaching the tipping point is just a small piece of a bigger puzzle for Dash. There is just about three weeks left to try and reach the $10,000 total funding goal to cover costs associated with data hosting, filing for IP protection, and marketing.
