Designer Amanda Ryan took a two-month-long volunteer trip in the slums of Bangladesh and cam home with a mission to empower and educate women through fashion. Bachhara is Amanda’s super hip clothing line of dresses created by local women in Bangladesh. The clothing line’s sales provide 90% of the revenue for the Jaago Foundation sewing centre, a social business dedicated to funding the Jaago Foundation School. Bachhara creates a space where women are trained and given the support they need to succeed. They’ve raised over $5,000 to date and can now bring a small collection from their 2013 Summer collection to Australia to sell.

The villagers of rural Malawi all share the same dream—to overcome poverty by creating their own community bank. Now, they are Banking on Change—the $3,000 raised to date will allow them to continue training bank staff, set up a business kiosk for advising local entrepreneurs, and directly invest in the bank to increase the asset base for loans.

Thirty-eight villages in rural Malawi have a shared dream of overcoming poverty through their own community bank. With Empower Inc’s assistance, they have forged plans to form a self-reliant region and have established a goal of being completely independent of aid by 2015. Empower Inc believes this is possible and very much within grasp for these villages. They have already begun training the management committee and front-line bank staff for the community banks. An organization dedicated to creating viral videos for just causes and worthy ideas to catalyze change, Ample Earth will produce a film predicting what would happen if these pesticides cause the extinction of bees, bugs, and birds. Professor of animation at New York University and award winning animator Patrick Smith will be animating for the film. The funds will allow them to pay animators, voice artists, musicians, and writers.

The Media, the Public, and the Human Cost of War—this project is raising funds for a poll of the UK public to discover estimates of Iraqi deaths since the ‘Shock and Awe’ campaign was launched 10 years ago in the US and UK. The numbers gathered will be shared with journalists, bloggers, and activists to allow voices not paid for by corporate interests to be heard and support a healthy democratic check on power. The $1,210 raised to date will help pay for a reputable national polling agency in the UK to conduct their recommended poll of public opinion.

Aiming to raise awareness and funds for HOPE Africa, the James Ihedigbo Invitational is a sports clinic hosted by James Ihedigbo, current member of Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens. The initiative began in 2012 and this year’s event will take place on April 20th at the Amherst Regional High School Field. It not only helps raise funds and build awareness for HOPE Africa, it also provides an atmosphere for student-athletes to learn from a local NFL player. The funds raised so far will help to partially run the event, with fewer attendees and James running all the drills. The ultimate goal would allow more student-athletes to attend and increase the number of coaches that can help James.
Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools prepare scholars to enter and succeed in competitive colleges and empower students to create a more just, free, and equal world. Chavez Schools launched this project to help the children of Chavez Prep Middle School get a new gymnasium. The students at Chavez Prep, one of the highest-performing schools in the D.C. area, do not have a gymnasium. Gym classes are currently held in public parks, parking lots, and basement classrooms. Campaign contributions will provide a safe place for students to learn and grow and create a gathering place where the entire school can come together, develop a healthier community, and build memories. Now that the campaign has raised almost $8,000, Chavez Prep will be able to purchase all equipment that students will use in the gym once construction is complete.

The founder of No Stigma is a war veteran living with PTSD that not only has a successful blog, but also has experience working with Volunteers of America on the HBO Documentary Wartorn. He is raising funds to incorporate No Stigma as a 501(c)3 organization, develop and host a website, design a logo, and free cash flow so he can begin programs to help veterans with PTSD be treated equitably. Reaching his tipping point goal of $5,000 means he can now officially incorporate his nonprofit and create a website. Any additional funds will be used to help free up cash flow so he can support advocacy programs, design and create promotional materials, and travel to conferences.

With a vision to bring families together by encouraging them to participate in charitable service, FUSE Families With Purpose is raising funds to develop a computer game for families in hopes of helping to unify and strengthen them. While participating as a team in the video game, families are prompted to engage in quests outside the game such as helping a neighbor, going to a senior home, sitting down as a family for dinner, or even participating a weekly family meeting. Once the challenge is completed, they earn points in the game which allows them to complete levels and release sponsor-donated funds that are given throughout the world to help families. Meeting the tipping point goal of $7,280 will allow FUSE to create a prototype of the game and present it to the World Congress of Families in Sydney Australia in May 2013.

The Lents community in Portland, Oregon is a community of underserved people who do not have access to quality child care. Little Adventurers Day Home, an early childhood education and development social enterprise, opened in this community in 2011 but was forced close down because it was not prepared for the immense growth it experienced. Now with a better understanding of the needs of the community and a plan to fulfill those needs, they are seeking funds to reopen their doors. The tipping point goal of $3,450 would allow them to reopen with the bare essentials needed to help children during the day and have after school programs. The total funding goal would allow them to build a child care tuition assistance fund that covers monthly child care costs for low and no-income families.

OTOXO Productions is going to make a social documentary about ADAMA’s work, the people who do it, and the people whose lives are changed by it. Six backers have contributed a total of $300 because they believe in Preventing Social Exclusion in Innovative Ways. ADAMA can now, at the very least, produce the documentary. I am currently working towards a BS in Information Design and Corporate Communication at Bentley University. Before college, I hadn’t any idea where I wanted life to take me so I decided to just let the wind blow me around a bit. The following summer, I shipped myself off to Romania through Learning Enterprises where I volunteered running English camps. The children I met there made me realize how much just one hello, one meal, or one hug can really grow change in someone’s life. After coming back to the US I’ve been keeping myself busy working odd jobs, studying and taking every opportunity I can to mesh my business degree with my love for positive change.
